Leaving Alberta

This morning I said goodbye to my mum and dad and my lovely Alberta to set off on a new adventure. The first leg of my six-month trip to Australia is to spend a few days on the coast of British Columbia. Plane to Vancouver, ferry to Victoria, then back to Vancouver for the long haul to the Southern hemisphere.

Flying over the Rockies was new. Until now I've only flown the other direction, over prairies, lakes and the ocean. It couldn't have been a better day for it, visibility-wise.

This trip is already proving to be tricky. Since this time I am leaving for six months of living in a different country instead of one month traipsing about Europe, I packed more stuff. Turns out, it's difficult to carry "more stuff". Not to mention awkward. I guess now I know I can walk for a kilometer carrying almost 80 pounds of luggage. We'll see how long I can keep that up.

Got myself to the Hostel International in Victoria and spent the afternoon window shopping and wandering the streets, ate the tacos I have been craving for weeks for dinner, frozen yogurt for dessert and picked up Starbucks on the way to Victoria's Ghostly Walk.

Victoria claims to be the most haunted city in British Columbia, every neighbourhood has at least one ghost, so they say. The Ghostly Walk takes visitors through the streets and alleys of Victoria, while your guide spookily regales tales of grisly murders and gruesome suicides that have left ghosts to haunt the old port city. All in all a fun time, not quite as good as the Grim Reaper tour of London; but then, not much can measure up to the creepy of Jack the Ripper.
